Do you wonder...
- Why do
my partner and I get into so many fights? - What
is going on to keep me stuck in life? - What
am I doing to turn people off? - Why am
I attracted to the wrong people? - Why is
my partner acting that way? - How
can I understand my personality?
The Pattern System is a breakthrough in understanding personality that is oriented toward psychological healing and personal growth.
It also helps you to understand other people--why they respond as they do, what
makes them tick.
Once your have understood the Pattern System and explored
yourself according to its model, you will have a comprehensive map of your
psyche. You will be able to see
- Your strengths
- Your defenses
- What drives your behavior
- Why you feel bad about
yourself - Your underlying emotional
pain - How you compensate for that
- Your inner conflicts
- The leading edge of your
growth
If you are a therapist, coach, or other professional, do you
ask yourself...
- How
can I understand my clients' personalities in a fuller way? - Why is
that client's therapy not moving? - What
is going on in my relationship with that client? - What
is the primary issue for that client? - What
are the psychodynamics underlying that behavior?
The Pattern System A
Periodic Table for Psychology can help you answer these questions. You can
fully understand your clients' personality patterns--not just their "type" but
the detailed structure of their psychology.
The Pattern System doesn't just focus narrowly on
psychopathology. It doesn't even just focus on dysfunctional patterns. It also
helps you to understand functional behavior and healthy capacities. This means
that you can see your strengths and those capacities you need to develop to
reach your personal goals.
The Pattern System is different from the usual systems of
character types, such as the Enneagram or the DISC, because these systems
attempt to capture a person's entire character in one type, even though they do
allow for somewhat more complexity. The Pattern System recognizes and reflects
the complexity of the human psyche. In the Pattern System, each dysfunctional pattern and healthy capacity describes just one aspect of a client's personality, and
each person will have many of them. In fact, the richness of the Pattern System
fosters an attitude of looking deeply in order to understand the uniqueness and
multifaceted features of each individual's personality.
One of the important aspects of the Pattern System is that a
person's profile can change over time. In fact, the distinction between
problematic patterns and healthy capacities gives you explicit information
about those aspects of the psyche that can change through therapy, coaching, or
other personal growth work--specifically how patterns can be transformed into
capacities.
The Pattern System is potent for psychological healing and
personal growth when integrated with Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS).
IFS is a highly effective form of individual psychotherapy that I use in my
practice as a psychotherapist and have written extensively about. Self-Therapy Journey is an
online tool that integrates the Pattern System with IFS; you can use it for
both deep psychological healing and behavior change.

The Pattern System is easy to approach, and rewards extended exploration. For me, the content and structure intuitively feel right, and are easy to explore and validate by their usefulness in my own life. These properties result from good design, good theory and good writing. The system agrees with and extends what I know from my own life and the converging wisdom of previous systems. Impeccable systems thinking guided by an empowering philosophy transform this shared knowledge into something much more lucid and powerful.
The Pattern System is as self-validating as a new pair of glasses, if I could look inside as well as outside with those glasses. As I use The Pattern System I will notice any distortions or blind spots and update my review accordingly.
At this point, my impression is that combining The Pattern System with IFS gives me the first adequate full-coverage model of my own psyche from the points of view that matter most. IFS can model not only the process of healing and growth, but also the process and experience that is consciousness itself. The Pattern System models essential qualities of being human as dimensions in which we all live.
The scope and flexibility of this composite model reveals many glories of mature systems thinking. It scales down to describe a brief social interaction, and scales up to describe a lifetime of development. It can accurately explain one situation at a time and reveal emerging patterns across many situations. As many dimensions of the Pattern System can be considered as needed for completeness and simplicity. IFS and The Pattern System can play well with other theories to include biological, existential, social, spiritual aspects.
The Pattern System and IFS seem right because they handle so many difficult issues so well. They can unify definitions of what is sick, what is healthy, what is the good life, although these vary widely across times and places. They leave full room for the person-situation debate, while supporting the essential freedom of the individual, and acknowledging dysfunction while dissolving stigma. They beautifully handle the multiplicity and unity of personality. As for the nature-nurture debate, there is plenty of flexibility to integrate bodily aspects, trauma, temperament, etc. Only a strong determinist would feel compelled to assert a contradiction.
No matter what the obstacles imposed by nature and society, a human being needs to understand one's own life, and realize the amazing potential of being fully alive as one's true self. Of all the ways to do that that have been found, I think most are compatible with and would be enhanced by using The Pattern System (and the Internal Family Systems Therapy model).

The Pattern System A Periodic Table for Psychology edition by Jay Earley Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews
A great buy for the scientifically challenged, or the students to learn from.
Highly useful.
I recommend buying it too all.
This book is full of valuable information in a well organized form. It integrates with most of interpersonal psychology, and especially Internal Family Systems. I enjoyed reading it -- and I am already using it as a constant reference source. An amazing accomplishment. After reading it, I ordered a second copy to loan out to friends, because I don't want to lose my copy but I want to share it with others. I also ordered several of the sub-books that develop further some of the topics in this book. Highly recommended.
A- mazing. Yes, just do it. So fascinating. You will think about everyone you know and be analyzing them.
The Pattern System is an elegant and comprehensive road map to help you understand, work with, and heal aspects of your personality. What I love about it is that it gives a practical, easy to understand structure to the complex workings of the human psyche.
One thing that makes the Pattern System so valuable is that it looks at many different dimensions of personality, not just one or a handful. It helps you identify patterns of behavior that work well for you and ones where you have difficulties. It goes into detail about the underlying dynamics that can create patterns and how they can manifest in your life.
Another part of the Pattern System that I especially appreciate is the focus on capacities, which are healthy ways of being. Developing capacities is integrated into the process of healing dysfunctional patterns. The Pattern System can be used in conjunction with IFS (Internal Family Systems) or can be used by itself. I know that I will keep exploring myself using the Pattern System for years to come.
Especially helpful as a non pathological approach for understanding how my behavior may activate other people’s wounds and patterns. This understanding helps me to manage the activation of my own patterns and respond from self.
I have a passion for all fields of Psychology and like to read everything on the subject I can get my hands on in my continual quest for more insight and understanding into the human condition and what makes us behave the way we do, as well as how we can live our best lives. The Pattern System presents every possible kind of human behaviour, and their degrees of intensity, in the form of a reference table. This means you can scan through all these ranges and degrees of human character traits with ease. Most fascinating and clarifying. I plan to order a hard copy as I know it will be an invaluable aid for reflection in my new counselling practice. It also made me want to read more by this author.
I found this book to be confusing to understand and almost impossibe to work with. Having a Master's in English, I don't feel it was a comprehension issue on my part, but rather that the author was simply "all over the place" in his thought process. My advice is to try a sample of this book before committing time or money to it. I really did devote time and effort to this, even going back to it several times.
